1. What is “Sharepoint?

Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2003, aka, SharePoint or “student portal” is a web based application that provides a secure storage solution that students can access from school or home.

Students will have their own SharePoint space with 100 MB of storage. They will be able to upload assignments to either their own site or the teachers' class sites.

The students' SharePoint site are provided to the students by the VBCPS school system, therefore all students must abide by the AUP agreements or they will loose access to their site. Teachers and administrators will have access to view all student sites and files, anytime, anywhere.

2. How do I log in at school?

Teachers, Students and Parents with student login and passwords:

Click on the following links for students or teachers. On the address bar replace the words: your_id_number (or "login name") with your own ID (student's permanent number) and hit enter.

Teacher SharePoint Log in

3. How do I log in at home?

Click on the same links above but you will have to login to the network first

Home computer: At the login screen . . . .

Teachers must type:
id_name@vbschools.com & password
or vbschools\id_name & password

Students must type: id_#@vbstudents.com & password
or vbstudents\id_# & password

Some Tips & Tricks on connecting at home:

Selected Pages from Online SharePoint Manual on connecting at home

Turn off Pop-Up blockers or say “allow for this site.”

Make sure you have the latest greatest version of your browser (our system works best with Internet Explorer, version 5.5 or higher).

Make sure you are connecting to the latest version of the web pages.

Clear cache, delete old files, history and cookies in your browser if you are having problems Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options

          Log in properly

          vbstudents\id_name (student's permanent number)

Their new password – not the one on the sheet (most of them changed that one the first time they logged in, however if the temporary password had a word in it, they kept it.)

Some More ideas:

*Making sure the password is correct
*add studentportal.vbschools.com to your list of Intranet sites under Tools - Options -
*xxxxx@vbstudents.com is the best username if using Internet Explorer.
*If you connect through AOL/ MSN/ PeoplePC/ Netzero or any other hybrid browser, you need to minimize and start a clean copy of IE.
*if you use mozilla, netscape, firefox, all you need to enter is xxxxx and nothing else for the user name.
*If you have several profiles on your home computer, you have to have the administrators rights.
for Windows XP or 2000:
*For user name use 1 of the following:
vbstudents\(student id number)
--ex:vbstudents\xxxxx
(student id number)@vbstudents.com
--ex: xxxxx@vbstudents.com
*the domain is: vbstudents
for Windows 98
*your user name is only your student id number
*the domain is: vbstudents

4. Where can I read about Sharepoint and get help?

There are teacher and student help pages on the portal. Teachers can access http://studentportal.vbschools.com/teacherinfo which has the training documentation.

Students can access http://studentportal.vbschools.com/StudentInfo/default.aspx

If you are doing this from home, it will ask you to authenticate; i.e. login. (see #3) Both of these pages will have an automatic link to your SharePoint Home Page when you are logged on.

5. How can teachers change a student's password?

Here's any easy-to-use handout in pdf format. I also have the same document in Word filed under
I:\Teachers\Sharepoint Help

6. Training

Initital Network and SharePoint training will be conducted the 2nd week of school through students' English Classes for all students.
