Kempsville Middle School Clubs and Activities
Dear KMS Students:
You will find a list of clubs and activities that will be offered during the 2007-2008 school year. Activity buses will run Monday – Friday at 5:30 p.m. If a parent is not present at 5:30 p.m., the child will be placed on the activity bus. Academic ChallengeSponsor: Mrs. Hackett Academic Challenge is a jeopardy-style trivia team that competes against other schools. Students in 6 th, 7 th & 8 th grade are invited to try out for the team at the beginning of the second nine weeks grading period. Matches and practices are held Mon.- Thurs. during the season, which runs from Nov.-Jan. The coach is Mrs. Hackett, who is in Room 110.
All A- board ClubSponsor: Ms. Trusz & Mrs. Alleyne-Calhoun The All A-board club will meet on Tuesdays and Thursday after school to play a variety of board games. The students will working on the individual and team work skills while interacting with other students and having fun!
Art ClubSponsor: Mr. Quirola Art Club will meet the 1 st & 3 rd Wednesday after school in room 132. The purpose of this club is to promote art appreciation among KMS students. There will be a fee for supplies.
Band Sponsor: Ms. Jackson
Beginning Band - This group includes 1st year instrumentalists and select students from the 7th and 8th grade bands. They perform at both the Winter and Spring concerts. All 6th grade and 7th grade beginners are required to be a part of this group, with minimal rehearsals outside of the school day prior to each performance.
Intermediate Band - The 7th grade intermediate band members are the basis of this group. They perform at both the Winter and Spring concerts, with minimal rehearsals outside of the school day prior to each performance.
Festival Band - Members of this elite group include 8th grade advanced students, as well as up and coming 8th graders who show a great deal of musicianship and responsibility throughout the first half of the school year. The group begins after school rehearsals in February to prepare for the District II VBODA adjudicated festival. It is an extreme honor to be involved in this ensemble.
Jazz Band - Jazz band is offered once a week to students currently enrolled in the band program. Participation is by audition only and meets on Wednesday mornings before school. Auditions will take place in mid-October. Please contact Ms. Jackson for more information.
Pans of Steel - This is a steel drum ensemble, beginning in January. Auditions are open to all students, even though it is a percussion based group. The students have several performances outside of school including the Virginia Arts Festival Panorama in May.
Pep Band - Pep band is offered to any student currently enrolled in the 7th grade intermediate or 8th grade concert band. The pep band performs for the home football games and usually for one school sponsored pep rally. Chorus Sponsor: Ms. Smith KMS Chorus – All chorus students participate in Winter and Spring concerts, field trips & other performances. Minimal rehearsals before concerts are expected.
Madrigals (KMS Honors Choir) - KMS 7 th & 8 th grade students who are enrolled in chorus for the year and maintain an A average can audition in December, for our KMS Honors Choir called Madrigals. This is a mixed choir of talented young musicians with soprano, alto, tenor & baritone voice ranges. These students rehearse a variety of music appropriate for concerts, community performances, school assemblies and a Busch Gardens trip in the spring. Madrigals rehearse every Tuesday & Thursday morning at 8 am in the chorus room. Gentlemen may also have Wednesday morning rehearsals. Opera Club – This club meets every other Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. as needed. Students visit live opera at Harrison Opera House & learn about opera. Treble Clef (KMS Honors Choir) - This choir contains sopranos and alto voice ranges and performs with our Madrigals mixed choir in their performances, school assemblies, community activities, and Busch Gardens trip in the spring. Students who are interested may audition in the spring semester. Treble clef rehearses every Tuesday & Thursday morning at 7:15 am in the chorus room.
Crime Solvers Sponsor: Officer Hunter & Mrs. Hendershot Crime Solvers is designed to promote school safety and civic awareness. The club participates in the Crime Solvers Summit, various field trips throughout the year and brings in guest speakers. (For example: Forensics unit, K-9 & Police Aviation) An announcement will be made regarding the first meeting. Debate Sponsor: Mr. Cowan Debate is an interscholastic activity in which students compete in two-man teams. The debate season runs from September through November.
Drama ClubSponsor: Ms. Sullivan The KMS Drama Club is open to all students enrolled at our school. The Drama Club has three different groups and puts on four different productions throughout the year. For further explanation of each of the groups see below:
Drama Club Group: This group puts on two plays throughout the year (one in December and one in May). Anyone who is interested in being on stage or behind the scenes can be in these two productions. Auditions for the December production will be October 2nd and October 4 th and auditions for the May production will be sometime in March (Every student who wants to be in these two productions is cast in a part). The practice schedule for these two productions is set after everyone is cast.
One-Act Troupe: This group is a competitive group open to 6 th, 7 th & 8 th graders. This group participates in the Virginia Beach City-Wide One Act Play Festival at the end of March. This is a select group of 18-25 students. Auditions are held in January to select students for this troupe. The practice schedule is set after everyone is cast.
Drama Troupe: This group is a competitive group open to 7 th & 8 th graders. This is the top acting group that travels all around, Virginia to participate in the Virginia Theatre Association’s Drama Festival in November. This group is made up of 10-14 students and auditions are held in May.
Drama ClubSponsor: Ms. Sullivan The KMS Drill (Flag) Team is open for try-outs to all students enrolled at our school. The drill (flag) team performs with the pep band at the last two home football games and usually for one school sponsored pep rally. Forensics Sponsor: Mrs. Reynolds Do you enjoy poetry, prose, spelling, writing, persuasive speeches and speaking in front of people? You may be wondering what does that have to do with Forensics. Forensics is a competitive speaking sport, where members compete against other schools. Practices will begin at the end of March and the competition is the middle of May.
Interscholastic Sports In order to participate in the interscholastic sports program, students must have a MSL physical form on file with the Student Activities Coordinator, Lisa Masisak. If you need additional information about tryout dates, call Mrs. Masisak at 474-8444.

KMS Concert Orchestra Sponsor: Mrs. Taylor The Kempsville Middle School Concert Orchestra is the combination of the 7 th & 8 th grade Orchestra students. These students meet every Thursday after school to rehearse and train for many different musical competitions. It also promotes discipline, both musically and individually; patience, and commitment to themselves and others.
National Junior Honor Society: The purpose of the National Junior Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop character, and to encourage citizenship. Students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in these areas and have a minimum of a 3.5 grade point average for the first and second quarters of the current year will be invited to apply. Invitations are given to potential inductees by the first week of February and are due back to the sponsors by the end of the month. The Faculty Council will review information packets and render their decisions in a timely manner. Selected candidates will be inducted in the beginning of March. Meetings are decided upon by the current group and will be announced in advance. If you would like more information, please contact Mr. Bowles or Ms. Sullivan.
SCA Sponsors: Mrs. Farmer, Ms. Johnson & Mrs. Phelps The SCA is a group of students who make a difference at KMS. These students help our community and provide services for our school. They have a voice in organizing school functions. Join the SCA and learn about leadership, citizenship, teamwork and friendship, but most of all, have fun. The executive council will meet the 4 th Friday of each month in room 134A before school from 8:15 a.m. – 8: 55 a.m. The executive council and homeroom representatives will meet the 2 nd Wednesday of each month after school in room 134A from 4-5:25 p.m.
Student Ambassadors Sponsors: Mrs. Hargrove & Mrs. Razos Student Ambassadors assist with transition of fifth graders to middle school. 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th graders are selected by an application process after being recommended by their teachers in the fall.
Tech Education Club Sponsor: Mr. Brown The first meeting will be on September 15 th after school to elect officers. We will meet the 2 nd and 4 th Wednesday of each month at 7:30 a.m.
Tolerance Club Sponsor: Mr. Whitley The Tolerance Club helps promote awareness of differences among members of the Kempsville Middle School Community while also acknowledging that ultimately we are all the same. Through this recognition, a better understanding will help create a more harmonious school environment.
Viva La Volunteers Sponsor: Ms. Newswanger & Mrs. Bunner The volunteer club is open to all students willing to give up an occasional Saturday and two days a month to help our community. Activities in the past have included bingo at the nursing home, Clean the Bay Day and many afternoon jobs such as cleaning up the school grounds. The club will meet after school the 1 st & 3 rd Tuesday of each month in room 123.
Yearbook - Yearbook Sponsors: Mrs. Archer & Mrs. Caviness Applicants must be dependable, have good grades, teacher recommendations, and a willingness to work hard. Meetings will be the 1st and 3rd Wednesday before school.
