AVID Fundraiser:  All Great American Fundraiser monies are due to Mrs. Sutterluety no later than 2:00 p.m. today.

Green Team:  Members of the Green Team who are working on awareness posters should stay after school with Mrs. Bowles on Tuesday, February 28th to finish the posters. See Mrs. Bowles with any questions.

Dr.  Seuss:  March 2nd is Dr. Seuss' birthday! The KMS Library is celebrating by asking students to come pose at our Seuss-Booth during their CARE time on March 2nd.  You may also stop by anytime between now and March 2nd to add to your favorite title to our Read Across America Favorite Book wall.

Reflections Winners:  Congratulations to our City Wide Reflections Awards winners.  Noah C. received 2nd place in Photography and Gigi M. received 2nd place in Dance.  Way to go!

Spring Tryouts:  Students who are interested in trying out for Forensics, Baseball, Softball, boys and girls Track, or Field Hockey should stop by the Student Activities Office to pick up an informational flyer.  Those students interested in trying out for Track should pick up the spring tryout flyer AND the track specific flyer.

PTA Volunteers:  The PTA is looking for volunteers to assist with various school and PTA events this March.  It's not too late for students to return their orange flyer to their A-day homeroom teacher.  If the flyer is returned by February 28th, the student will receive a free Slurpee coupon compliments of the PTA.

NJHS:  There will be an NJHS make-up meeting today 1:30 p.m. in Mrs. Yeager's room.  Those who need a pass should stop pick up a pass in the folder outside of Room 130.  There will also be a meeting on Tuesday, February 28th at 8:30 a.m. in the Library.

Mentoring:  Students who are interested in mentoring Providence Elementary students should pick up a mentoring permission slip from Mrs. Yeager.  Students who sign up to help out in a teacher's classroom will have various tasks - mentoring a student one to one, helping teachers with their morning routines, reading with students, helping with math facts, and lots more! See Mrs. Yeager for more info. We hope to start this next week

AVID Party:  The AVID P2 Party will be held tonight.  Meet in the Cafeteria for dinner at 6:00 p.m.  The party will then move to the gym.

Purple Heart:  NJHS is collecting items for Purple Heart.  Donate books, blankets, bedding, or clothing and place them in the collection boxes by Mrs. Yeager’s room. Each box has an NJHS officer’s name on it - whichever officer gets the most items will get a pie in the face!

Debate Team:  The KMS Debate Team had the first matches of the season vs Independence last night.  The "A" Team of Vanessa F. and Marianna S. suffered a mystifying loss while the "B" Team of Solana L. and Christian J. scored a decisive win.  Both teams deserved victories and we will reset and get ready for our match next Tuesday.  The entire squad displayed excellent sportsmanship under trying conditions and showed the great character KMS has always been known for!

Wrestling:  The Braves lost a hard fought match against Lynnhaven last night.  Winning matches for the team were Logan V., Ian L., Thomas K., Zavien Z., Jaylon W.

Black History Month: In honor of Black History Month we celebrate Elijah McCoy.
The son of former slaves from Kentucky who had escaped via the Underground Railroad to Canada, at 15 years of age Elijah McCoy traveled to Scotland seeking the educational opportunities from which blacks were excluded in the Americas. He trained in mechanical engineering and then moved to the United States. He then took a job as a Railroad Fireman. At that time, locomotives needed to be shut down periodically to be lubricated to avoid overheating. The frequent stops prevented railroads from being profitable until McCoy developed the “lubricating cup” for steam engines, which kept locomotives constantly lubricated, preventing frequent stops and overheating. He patented the lubricating cup in 1872. It represented the most profitable of his more than 58 patents, which included a folding ironing board and an automatic sprinkler.
