Congratulations to the KMS STEM Robotics Team for their impressive showing at the 2014 STEM Robotics Competition. For six months, 27 dedicated students quietly worked after school to design, build and test 10 competition robots, making up five KMS teams. Four out of the five teams qualified for the semi-finals, and one of those four teams made it all the way to the championship match against Princess Anne High School. After an intense championship match, KMS fell just short of becoming the overall champions, finishing 2nd out of 136 teams made up of over 500 students. This is a monumental achievement as this is the first time in competition history that a middle school was able to compete for the overall championship. Special thanks to Mr. McKay for all his hard work and dedication to the Robotics Club. A huge thank you to Mr. Tunney for his dedication and commitment towards excellence! You are the best!!

Attention all 7th graders: This Friday, October 24th, all 7th graders will be getting their vision and hearing checked. If you wear glasses, please wear them to your vision screening. Thank you!

The KMS Diversity Club will meet this afternoon in room 127.  All KMS students are welcome.  See Mr. Whitley with any questions, and remember that you will be taking the activity bus or should have a ride arranged for 5:35pm.

Leadership WorkshopAttention students, Leadership Workshop applications are due tomorrow by 3:50 pm. If you have any questions see Mrs. Fraley in the library.

Book Fair:  There’s just two days left for the Book Fair!  If you still plan to make a purchase, be sure to come down today or tomorrow.  The Book Fair is open each day this week until 4 pm with special late hours Friday until 6:30 pm.  You may come down to the library to make purchases any time you have permission from your teacher. If you won a special Scholastic Bucks card from Dr. Jenkins, make sure you use it by the end of today.

Halloween Dance:  Today is your last chance to purchase a ticket for the Halloween Dance. Tickets are $5 and will be sold during lunch hours.  Remember, tickets will not be sold at the door.  So get your costume ready, but remember masks are not allowed. The dance is this Friday night, October 24th, at 6:30 pm in the cafeteria.

Is your homeroom class going to win donuts?  Tomorrow is the last day to bring in labels for the contest. The homeroom for each grade level that has the most labels will receive donuts for the entire homeroom class! So look in your pantry tonight and get those labels!

Girls’ Soccer team:  Be sure to come by Coach Massey’s classroom, room 144, to pick up your pictures. The girls’ basketball season will be starting soon.  Girls who are interested in trying out for the team should pick up an informational flyer from the student activities office this week.

The 8th grade book club meets today at 11:10 in the library.  Be sure to bring your book with you.  Come to the library after the announcements if you need a lunch pass.

Important changes in reporting absences

If your child is absent from school, please call the attendance mailbox at (757) 648-4700 then enter 1 70698 #.

Virginia Beach City Public School policy requires that in cases of all absences, students must present a written excuse from a parent/guardian to the school stating the reason, even if you have called in the absence. Your child will be marked OU (other unexcused) until we receive a written note.
